2018 GLVC TOURNAMENT BRACKET
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
(EAST PEORIA, Ill., May 4)—The McKendree University softball team saw its 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament run come to an end Friday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to Missouri S&T in the first game of the day at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
The Bearcats, ranked No. 25 in the NFCA Division II coaches poll, overcame an early two-run deficit to pull even at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Miners responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead for good. The defeat was the second for McKendree in the double-elimination GLVC Tournament. The Bearcats are now 38-16 overall.
Sophomore infielder
Caitlyn Lowry (St. Louis, MO/Notre Dame), senior designated player
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) and freshman outfielders
Shelby Summer (Washington, IL/Washington) Konnor Arrowood (Fulton, MO/South Callaway) each had two hits to lead the Bearcats' offense against Missouri S&T. Lowry drilled her sixth homer of the season in the contest, a solo shot leading off the fourth inning.
McKendree freshman
Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) worked out of jams in each of the first two innings as Missouri S&T (27-26) left the bases loaded in both frames. However, a leadoff home run by Hannah Franceschini in the bottom of the second put the Miners in front 1-0. Missouri S&T then tacked on a run in the third inning for a 2-0 lead before McKendree began its comeback.
Lowry led off the top of the fourth inning with a towering blast over the left-center field fence to help the Bearcats cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Lowry then started the game-tying rally for McKendree in the top of the sixth with a single to right-center field. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman infielder
Haegen Boyer (Eddyville, IA/Eddyville) and a groundout by Arrowood moved Lowry to third base, Summer punched and RBI single up the middle to bring home Lowry and knot the contest at 2-2.
The deadlock was short-lived, however, as Missouri S&T scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 4-2. McKendree did bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but the Miners recorded the final out to advance in the GLVC Tournament.
Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs over her six innings of work for the Bearcats.
McKendree will now await the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Selection Show, which will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on
