Charles “Chick” Summers
Alumni Sports Professional
Class of 1931
Chick played basketball, football, and track at McKendree. He was a member of Alpha Psi Omega and the M Club before his graduation in 1931. Chick went on to distinguish himself and his alma mater as a teacher and coach at East Alton-Wood River High. For 42 years Chick taught and coached. As basketball coach, Summers guided his teams to five conference championships, seven regional championships and three state tournament appearances. As baseball coach, his teams earned four district championships, four regional championships and two conference championships. His 1946 and 1961 teams advanced to the state tournament, taking second place in 1961. Chick was inducted into the Illinois High School Hall of Fame in 1993. The gym floor at East Alton-Wood River was named the “Coach Chick Summers Home Court” and the street in front of the school was renamed “Chick Summers Drive.”
