John earned fifteen varsity letters: four in basketball, four in baseball, four in track, and three in football. In his senior year, John was captain of the basketball, baseball, and track teams, and captain-elect of the football team. He was starting guard on the championship 1925-26 basketball team. John set an all-time McKendree record in 1925 of 10 seconds in the 100 yard dash. He won the 220 yard dash, broad jump, high jump, and low hurdles. John ran the last leg of the ½ mile relay team that set a record of 1:35.2. A full-back, he was named to the All-Little Nineteen Conference Football Team in 1926. The St. Louis Baseball Cardinals offered him a contract, but a knee injury his senior year shattered his dream of playing pro baseball. John’s name appears in the 1928 Who’s Who in American Sports. He became a fine teacher and successful coach in Elkville, Ill.
