Joe earned seven varsity letters: three in track and four in football. His outstanding play in football earned him recognition as a Little 19 Conference all star. In 1931 he was Associated Press and United Press All-Star Team Honorable Mention. In 1932 the Bloomington Pantagraph named him to the First All-Star Team as fullback, the United Press named him to the First All-Star Team as fullback, and the Associated Press named him to the Second All-Star Team as fullback. Joe was voted the Bearcat grid squad’s Most Valuable Player in 1932. He opened and closed his McKendree College football career by scoring all the points in his first and final games. Joe played professional football with the St. Louis Gunners for two years. Joe went on to coach in Poplar Bluff and Sikeston, Mo., Cairo, Eldorado, and Freeport, Ill.
