(LEBANON, Ill., June 17)—The student-athletes of McKendree University helped make the Bearcats' first year as members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference a memorable one in the classroom.

McKendree garnered a total of 159 Academic All-GLVC recipients when the league announced its list of honorees on Monday. McKendree had the fourth-highest number of Academic All-Conference award winners among the 16 member institutions of the GLVC. In all, a conference-record 2,000 student-athletes collected Academic All-GLVC honors for the 2012-13 academic year. In fact, the GLVC ranked third of all active NCAA Division II conferences in grade-point average.

The Academic All-GLVC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes that have completed two semesters at their respective institutions and maintained a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or have attained a 3.40 GPA over the two most recent semesters. Student-athletes that have attained a 3.40 GPA and not completed two semesters are also honored.

"At McKendree University, we expect our student-athletes to strive for a championship effort both on the field and in the classroom," said Chuck Brueggemann, director of athletics at McKendree. "The fact that one-quarter of our student-athletes have reached the lofty academic standards set by the GLVC is a testament to the hard work put forth by those student-athletes, our coaching staff and our faculty. This is a shining example of teamwork on many levels and we are proud of this great accomplishment."

In its first season competing as members of the GLVC, McKendree led the conference by earning the most honorees in four sports, including volleyball (11), men's golf (10), women's golf (10) and women's tennis (8). The Bearcats were also part of multiple-team ties in women's tennis and volleyball.

With its 159 Academic All-GLVC recipients, McKendree trailed only the University of Indianapolis (186), Bellarmine University (165) and Maryville University (160) in total honorees.
