Junior defensive lineman J.T. Smith (Clinton, Ill., Clinton) intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown with just 1:15 left before halftime in the Bearcats’ 21-14 road victory Saturday evening at Saint Ambrose University. The score marked the first career touchdown for Smith, who is in his first season as a starter at defensive tackle for McKendree.

 

In addition to his interception, Smith shared team-high honors with six tackles, including a half-tackle for loss. McKendree, the No. 14-ranked team in the NAIA, improved to 4-1 overall and remained perfect in Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League play at 2-0. Saint Ambrose, the No. 23 team in the same poll, slipped to 2-2 overall and dropped its conference opener.

 

This marked the second consecutive game that Smith posted an interception. He picked off a pass and returned it 17 yards in McKendree’s 58-3 victory at home against Iowa Wesleyan College back on Sept. 18.

 

Through five games, Smith is tied for third on the McKendree team in tackles with 20. In addition to his two interceptions, Smith has 2 ½ tackles for loss.
