(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 12)—The McKendree College hockey team completed a successful road trip to the north with a 6-2 victory Saturday at Northwestern University.
Freshman center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill.) scored a pair of goals, while junior Marcus Power (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill.) blanked the Wildcats over the first 54 minutes as the Bearcats improved to 8-12-1 overall. McKendree will return home to play host to the University of Kansas Friday at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. in Fairview Heights.
Sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior defenseman David Padgett (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Belleville, Ill.) each tallied a goal in the first period, while Donze scored his first of the contest with just eight seconds remaining to give McKendree a 3-0 lead. Donze added his second goal midway through the second period before sophomore wing Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill.) and junior wing Keith Jacob (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) (Fairview Heights, Ill.) each posted a goal in the third period.
Power, who made 29 saves for his fifth win of the season, carried a shutout until the 6:21 mark of the third period, when Northwestern’s Alex Biegler scored. The two goals allowed by McKendree was the second-fewest scored against the team in 2005-06 – the Bearcats stopped SIU-Edwardsville 7-1 on Oct. 7.
Sophomore defenseman Shawn McBride (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.) helped out with two assists for the Bearcats.
