(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 1)—The McKendree College hockey team won its second straight contest with a 12-5 victory Saturday at home against the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Sophomore center/wing Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill.) tallied a career-high five goals, while freshman center/wing Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.) added a hat trick to lead the Bearcats' offensive surge. McKendree is now 4-4 overall and will play host to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Fairview Heights.
McKendree rolled to a 3-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from freshman center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill.), junior center Brad Maggio (Collinsville, Illinois/) (Collinsville, Ill.) and sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa.). Ilges’ first goal of the night ignited a six-goal second period that pushed the Bearcats’ lead to 9-2. Ilges had three goals in the period, while Dreyer notched a pair.
Dreyer completed his hat trick just 13 seconds into the final period, while Ilges tallied two more goals to help the Bearcats maintain their lead.
Roberts finished with two goals and three assists for the Bearcats, while sophomore defenseman Shawn McBride (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.) chipped in with a season-high four assists.
Freshman Mike Stier (Belleville, Illinois/) (Belleville, Ill.) had 30 saves in goal to record his first win of the season.
