(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 6)—Junior forward Jarius Holmes (O' Fallon, Ill./O' Fallon) (Shiloh, Ill./O’Fallon) scored a pair of second-half goals in leading the McKendree College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory Friday at home against Missouri Valley College.

 

Holmes broke a scoreless tie in the 50^th minute of play, then scored on a penalty kick with exactly 11 minutes remaining to lift the Bearcats to the win. McKendree is unbeaten in its last seven matches, and improves to 8-3-1 on the year. McKendree will be on the road for its next five contests, beginning with a key American Midwest Conference match Wednesday against Missouri Baptist University. Match time is 7 p.m. in St. Louis.

 

Following a scoreless first half Holmes took a centering pass from junior midfielder Cole Harres (Belleville, Illinois/Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) and found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. With McKendree clinging to a 1-0 lead, Holmes was taken down in the box and converted on the penalty kick for an insurance tally.

 

Junior Santiago Hampton (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. George's) (Buenos Aires, Argentina) recorded three saves for his third shutout of the season. Santiago pushes his record to 6-1-1 on the year.

 

Missouri Valley drops to 7-5 overall.
