MEN’S BASKETBALL CRUISES INTO CHRISTMAS BREAK WITH 124-65 WIN AT CONCORDIA

Stan Mayfield had 18 points, seven assists and seven steals at Concordia
(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 18)—The McKendree College men’s basketball team shot nearly 63 percent in rolling to a 124-65 victory Monday night at Concordia Seminary.
 
Seven different players scored in double figures as the Bearcats posted their highest point total in a game since 2004. McKendree, the No. 21 team in NAIA Division I, wraps up the first half of its 2006-07 season with an overall record of 10-6. The Bearcats will return to action Jan. 9 with a home game against East-West University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
 
Two players enjoyed career nights for the Bearcats. Junior forward Paul Nazzaro (Scottsdale, Ariz./St. Mary's) (Scottsdale, Ariz./Mesa CC) led the effort for McKendree with a season-high 23 points, while sophomore guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh) (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh) came off the bench to post career highs with 18 points, seven assists and seven steals. Sophomore guard Eric Palm (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) and senior forward Mark Stovall (St. Louis, Mo./Jennings) (St. Louis, Mo./Jennings) each connected for 16 points for the Bearcats, and senior forward A.J. Rudd (Mt. Vernon, Ill./MacArthur) (Mt. Vernon, Ill./Mt. Vernon) chipped in with 12 points.
 
Senior forward Mike Strobbe (Ferguson, Mo./McCluer) (Ferguson, Mo./McCluer) and junior forward Rod Steele (Birmingham, Ala./Shades Valley) (Birmingham, Ala./Shades Valley) each recorded a double-double for McKendree. Strobbe had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Steele notched 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
As a team, McKendree was 49-of-78 from the field (62.8 percent), including a 75 percent clip (27-of-36) in the final 20 minutes of play. The Bearcats scored 74 points in the second half. McKendree’s 124 points were the most scored by a Bearcat team since a 127-69 win in Lebanon against Williams Baptist College in the first round of the 2004 American Midwest Conference Tournament.
 
Jeremy Lucke led Concordia with 21 points, while Stephen Carretto added 15 points and five steals for the Preachers.
