(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 21)-- The McKendree College women's soccer team defeated visiting Central Methodist University 3-1 to improve to 5-3 on the season. McKendree senior forward Jenna Shellenberg (Troy, Ill./Triad) (Troy, Ill./Triad) led the attack recorded three assists, the second most by a Bearcat in a single game.
McKendree sophomore Becky Requarth (Springfield, Ill./Rochester) (Springfield, Ill./Rochester) put the Bearcats up early with her first goal of the season just 11-minutes in. Lucy Elliott (Southampton, England/Taunton's) (Southampton, Hampshire/Tauntons) started the play with a pass into the box to Shellenberg. Shellenberg then one-touched the ball to an open Requarth who buried the shot.
The Bearcats scored again just 1:29 later when Katelyn Cleveland (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) netted her second goal of the season. Laura Raymond (O' Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) (O' Fallon, Ill./St. Dominic) crossed the ball into the box where Shellenberg then headed the ball to an open Cleveland for the goal.
Central Methodist was on the receiving end of a Bearcat miscue, when a Bearcat defender's clearing attempt went into the net for an own goal at the 32-minute mark.
McKendree didn't allow the Eagles a chance to get back into the game, out-shooting the Eagles 26-0 in the contest. McKendree added an insurance goal at the 63-minute mark when Ray Ray Cole (Raytown, Mo./St. Teresa's) (Raytown, Mo./St. Teresa's) scored her fourth goal of the season with Shellenberg assisting on the goal.
McKendree keeper Natalie Jameson (Troy, Ill./Triad) (Troy, Ill./Triad) picked up the win. McKendree will be in action again Saturday at home when they open American Midwest Conference play with a game against William Woods University. Game time is set for 1p.m.
