(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 27)-- The McKendree College men's soccer team played to a scoreless tie at home against American Midwest Conference foe the University of Illinois-Springfield. McKendree out-shot the Prairie Stars 15-10 in the game and had numerous scoring chances however they were unable to find the back of the net.
McKendree controlled the ball for the majority of the game, pressuring the Illinois-Springfield defense while keeping the Prairie Star attack under control. The Bearcats had their chances in the game, with opportunities coming early and late.
Just four-minutes into the game Tim Dew (Winchester, Hampshire/Peter Symonds) (Southampton, England/Tauntons) ripped a shot off the cross-bar to keep the game scoreless. With just nine-minutes remaining in regulation Eric Frierdich (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) had a head-ball attempt go off the cross-bar as well.
The final chance for the Bearcats came with just seconds remaining in the second overtime. Jarius Holmes (O' Fallon, Ill./O' Fallon) (O' Fallon, Ill./O' Fallon) played the ball off a corner kick with Craig Vigar (Southampton, Hampshire/Tauntons) (Southampton, England/Tauntons) sending a head ball on net but being stopped by the Prairie Star keeper with just two seconds remaining.
Bearcat keeper Santiago Hampton (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. George's) (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. George's) made two saves in recording his second consecutive shutout. McKendree is now 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in AMC play. The Bearcats will return to action October 6 at home when they face Columbia College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
