(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 31)—The McKendree College wrestling team started strong, but came up short Wednesday in its upset bid of Lindenwood University, 23-12.
The Bearcats won four of the first five matches to build a 12-4 advantage, but Lindenwood, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, swept the final five contests to pull away for the victory. McKendree, which was hosting its final home dual match of the 2006-07 season, drops to 5-4 overall. The Bearcats will be in Marshall, Mo., on Saturday for the Missouri Valley College Open.
Against Lindenwood, the Bearcats got off to a fast start by taking the first three matches. Sophomore
Jermaine Waye (Altama, Ga./) (Atlanta, Ga.) put McKendree in front with a 4-3 victory at 125 pounds. Senior
Mike Miller (Lawton, Okla./) (Lawton, Okla.) took a 6-3 decision for the Bearcats at 133 pounds before junior
Kyle Jahn (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) (Bolingbrook, Ill.) rolled to an 8-2 victory at 141 pounds.
After Lindenwood took the 149-pound match, freshman
Aaron Winning (Highland, Ill./) (Highland, Ill.) pushed McKendree out to a 12-4 by taking the 157-pound match, 7-4. However, the Lions rallied to take the last five matches to improve to 8-0 in dual match competition.
McKendree, which is ranked No. 9 in NAIA wrestling, had a two-match winning streak snapped with the loss.
