(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 11)—Senior wing
Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill./Highland) tallied six points in leading the McKendree University hockey team to a 12-2 victory Saturday on the road against Northwestern University.
Ilges scored a pair of goals and added four assists as the Bearcats completed the weekend sweep against the Wildcats. McKendree is now 9-5 overall and play host to Wheaton College Friday at 8 p.m. The contest will take place at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights.
Senior center
Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) added two goals and three assists for McKendree, while junior center
Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) and freshman wing Nick Smothers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) each chipped in with two goals. The Bearcats built a 5-0 lead after one period of play and 10-1 following the second period.
Sophomore
Mike Stier (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) collected 18 saves in goal for McKendree. The Bearcats held a 38-20 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
In the first period, Ilges and Roberts scored their two goals, sandwiched around a tally by Donze as McKendree raced to a five-goal advantage. Freshman defensemen
Alec Steiner (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) and and Smothers both found the back of the net to push the McKendree lead to 7-0 before Northwestern finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second period.
The 12 goals scored by McKendree is a season high, topping the previous mark set in a 10-1 victory over Western Illinois on Oct. 6.
