ROBERTS’ OVERTIME GOALS LIFTS BEARCATS PAST BRADLEY, 7-6; HOCKEY TEAM TAKES EIGHT-GAME WIN STREAK INTO BREAK

(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 10)—Senior center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) scored his second goal of the game at the 2:56 mark of overtime to give the McKendree University hockey team a 7-6 victory Saturday against Bradley University.
 
Roberts’ game-winning goal was his 23rd tally of the season, which helped the Bearcats extend their win streak to eight consecutive games. McKendree takes a 15-5 overall record into the holiday break, and will return to the ice Jan. 18 with a game in Springfield, Mo., against Missouri State University.
 
At Bradley, McKendree trailed 3-1 in the first period before senior wing Brian Neighbors (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) scored off a pass from junior defenseman Jordan Thompson (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade). Bradley then added a goal late in the period to regain a 4-2 lead heading into the first intermission.
 
The Bearcats tied the game in the second period on goals by freshman wing Nick Smothers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and Roberts. Bradley regained a 5-4 advantage before senior wing Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) knotted the contest at 5-5 with just under four minutes left in the second.
 
McKendree took its first lead of the contest, 6-5, in the third period when junior center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) netted an unassisted goal. Bradley forced the overtime period with a game-tying goal at the 3:10 mark of regulation.
 
Sophomore Mike Stier (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville) made 39 saves to grab the victory in goal for McKendree.
