TRACK AND FIELD TRIO QUALIFIES FOR NAIA NATIONALS AT DePAUW MEET; RELAYS PERFORM WELL AT INDIANA

(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 4)—The McKendree College indoor track and field teams had a busy weekend, competing in both the DePauw University Tiger Invitational and the Indiana University Relays.
 
The Bearcats found individual success at the DePauw meet as three people qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships to be held next month in Johnson City, Tenn. At the Indiana meet, McKendree had three relay teams meet the NAIA standards to qualify for the national event.
 
At DePauw, junior Julius Williams (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) won the triple jump with an effort of 52 feet, 11 ½ inches, while senior David Wellstead (London, England) was right behind in second place at 46 feet, 10 ¼ inches. Both earned their spot in the NAIA national field. Also posting a national qualifying standard at DePauw was sophomore Shawn Silvera (St. Catharine, Jamaica), who won the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 11 ½ inches.
 
In Bloomington, Ind., the McKendree women’s squad posted two qualifying times in relay events. The Bearcats’ 4 x 400-meter relay had a time of 3:56.45, while the 4 x 800-meter relay was clocked at 9:54.35. The McKendree men’s team had its 4 x 400-meter relay squad punch its ticket to Johnson City with a qualifying time of 3:21.57.
 
The McKendree College indoor track and field squads will be in action next weekend at the Central Missouri State University Meet in Warrensburg, Mo.
