(SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 18)—The McKendree College men’s tennis team has punched its ticket to next week’s NAIA Region V Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., thanks to a 5-1 victory Wednesday at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The teams were playing in the American Midwest Conference Play-In Match in Springfield, Ill.
The Bearcats swept its way to victory in all three doubles contests and earned wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles to come away with the win. McKendree collected its third dual match victory against Illinois-Springfield this season and stopped a four-match losing streak in the process. The Bearcats move to 4-5 overall.
In doubles play, senior
Daniel Quinn (Melbourne, Australia/Lewis and Clark CC) (Melbourne, Australia) and Alex Henne (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon) cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Junior
Ben Schloesser (Belleville, IL/Belleville East) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) and freshman Caio Tortato (Sao Paulo, Brazil) followed with an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles, while junior
Andres Marquez (Carterville, GA/Woodland) (Carterville, Ga./Woodland) and freshman Daniel Gonzalez (Lima, Peru) teamed to take the No. 3 doubles match by a count of 8-5.
Quinn brought the Bearcats closer to the match victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Gonzalez then closed out the dual with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
