(JACKSONVILLE, Ill., Sept. 1) – The McKendree University men’s soccer team opened up regular season play with a bang Saturday with a score of 22-0 over MacMurray College.

 

The Bearcats’ assists and goal totals for the contest are both among the highest ever for a single game in the NAIA. Their 19 assists are second highest all-time and 22 goals ranks fourth all-time for a single game in NAIA men’s soccer and are also new school records.

 

Eight Bearcat players scored goals for the Bearcats, who led 13-0 after one half of play. Freshman forward Bill Puckett (Southampton. England/Tauntons) (Southampton. England/Tauntons) topped the Bearcats with six goals and one assist in the match. Puckett’s goals and 13 points scored in the match are both new school records at McKendree. Junior forward Eric Frierdich (Columbia, Mo./Columbia) followed closely behind with five goals on the day. Sophomore midfielder Nico Klenk (Leimgarten, Germany) and freshman midfielder Daniele Campailla (Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany/Bertha von Suttner) (Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany) both found the back of the goal three times in the contest and freshman forward Max Stainmez (Holland, Ontario, Canada/Denison) (Holland, Ontario, Canada) also scored multiple goals, getting it by the keeper two times for the Bearcats. Junior midfielder Ryan Miller (Sycamore, Illinois/Sycamore) (Sycamore, Illinois/Sycamore), senior midfielder Tim Dew (Winchester, Hampshire/Peter Symonds) (Winchester, England), and freshman back Sam James (Southampton. England/Tauntons) (Southampton, England/Tauntons) rounded out the scoring for the Bearcats, scoring one goal a piece.

 

Senior goalkeeper Scott Genz (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) had two saves in the shutout win, improving his record to 1-0.

 

The Bearcats (1-0-0) will return to Jacksonville, Ill. Sunday to play Westminster College at 2 p.m.
