(Lebanon, Ill., Jan. 23)—The McKendree University wrestling team improved to 9-4 on the season after defeating the University of Indianapolis 30-11 Wednesday night. Indianapolis is currently ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II.

 

The Bearcats are currently ranked No. 5 in the NAIA and the Greyhounds are No. 11 in NCAA Division II. The Bearcats next match is January 30^th when they host Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at 7 p.m.

 

The Bearcats started off the night with Josh Bryant (Tuttle, Okla./) (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle) getting a forfeit win at 174 pounds. The Greyhounds bounced back though at 184 pounds, with Keith Smith winning a 9-2 decision over McKendree’s Tom Edwards (Belleville, Ill./) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East). Andrew Sanchez (Shiloh, Ill./) (Shiloh, Ill./O’Fallon) also got a forfeit win at 197 pounds to give the Bearcats a 12-3 lead early in the dual. Back to back wins by McKendree’s Dan Moore (Rolla, Mo./) (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) at heavyweight and A.J. Ciccarelli (Edwardsville, Ill./) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) at 125 pounds built the Bearcats lead to 18-3. Moore’s win was over Lynn Panko, the No. 8 wrestler in NCAA Div. II. Shane Perkey, the No. 1 wrestler in NCAA Division II at 133 pounds won a major decision over Wade Lowe (Godfrey, Ill./) (Godfrey, Ill./Alton), 11-3, but McKendree would win three of its last four matches to get the win. Jermaine Waye (Altama, Ga./) (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy), the No. 6 wrestler in the NAIA defeated Tyler Voth by technical fall 20-5 and Aaron Winning (Highland, Ill./) (Highland, Ill./Althoff Catholic), the No. 3 wrestler in the NAIA, defeated Mike Horton by major decision 10-0. Horton was ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II.
