(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 29)—Senior
Christopher Bethel (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine) (Nassau, Bahamas) turned in a championship performance Saturday for the McKendree University men’s track and field team at the Gladstein Invitational. The two-day event was hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Bethel rolled to victory in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. He turned in a time of 8.16 seconds to defeat runner-up Cory Holman of Rend Lake College by 0.18 seconds. Bethel’s victory on Saturday comes on the heels of his second-place effort at the Saluki Invitational Jan. 19 in Carbondale, Ill.
Three other Bearcats earned top-10 finishes at the Gladstein Invitational. Junior
Steve Hammond (Port More St. Catherine, Jamaica/St. Jago) (St. Catharine, Jamaica) took sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 15.43 meters. McKendree had two runners place in the top seven of the 600-meter run, with junior
Jermaine Myers (Manchester, Jamaica/Holmwood) (Manchester, Jamaica) taking sixth place and sophomore Jeff Brown (Marion, Ill./Marion) following right behind in seventh place. Myers posted a time of 1:23.47 in the race, while Brown was just seconds behind at 1:23.53.
McKendree will return to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for the Indiana University Relays. The two-day event is scheduled to begin Friday at 4 p.m., with action continuing on Saturday at 9 a.m.
