(WHEATON, Ill., Oct. 4)—The McKendree University hockey team scored 11 unanswered goals on its way to an 11-2 road victory Saturday against Wheaton College.
Five different Bearcat players scored two goals apiece to help McKendree complete a weekend sweep against Wheaton. McKendree improves to 4-2 on the season and will open the home portion of its schedule Friday against Robert Morris College-Peoria. Faceoff is set for 8 p.m. Prior to Friday's match, the Bearcats will be honored for their Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Silver Division championship from 2007-08.
Junior center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Fairview Heights) led the scoring frenzy for McKendree with two goals and four assists. Junior defenseman Chris Donahue (Levittown, Pa./Truman) (Levittown, Pa./Truman) added two goals and three assists, while senior center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem), freshman wing David Coleman (Greenville, Ill./Fort Zumwalt West) and senior wing Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) each chipped in with a pair of goals.
Host Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 90 seconds into the contest before McKendree reeled off 11 consecutive goals. The Bearcats grabbed a 5-1 lead after the first period and added two more goals in the second for a 7-1 advantage. McKendree pushed the margin to 11-1 before Wheaton finally ended the Bearcats' run in the third period.
Junior goalie Mike Stier (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) made 23 saves to pick up the victory between the pipes for McKendree.
