BEARCATS SPLIT AMC DOUBLEHEADER WITH MISSOURI BAPTIST

(LEBANON, Ill.-April 5)-It was a tale of two games for the the McKendree University softball team Saturday, losing game one 4-0, before winning 13-1 in game two to split an American Midwest Conference doubleheader with Missouri Baptist University.

The Bearcats, now 16-10 overall and 5-5 in the AMC, play Robert Morris College Saturday night at the McKendree Invitational at Trenton Park in Trenton, Ill.

The Lady Spartans held McKendree to only two hits in game one, while banging out nine hits of their own. Missouri Baptist scored two runs in the first inning, a run in the fifth and hit a home run in the seventh to defeat the Bearcats.

Junior pitcher Amy Quirin (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West HS) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) threw all seven innings, fanning seven batters and walking three. The loss dropped her to 5-5 on the season. Junior catcher Angie Maue (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin HS) (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin) had both Bearcat hits in game one.

In game two McKendree started off hot, scoring three runs in the top of the first. A Missouri Baptist run in the bottom of the inning cut the Bearcats lead to 3-1. McKendree added one more run in the fourth inning and exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to end the game 13-1.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Ward (White Hall, Ill./North Greene HS) (White Hall, Ill./North Greene) improved to 6-2 on the year, striking out five and giving up only four hits. Junior outfielder Kayla White (Buncombe, Ill./Vienna HS) (Buncombe, Ill./Vienna) and senior first baseman Rachael Ostertag (O' Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) both had three hits in the game. Ostertag had five RBI in the game and scored once, while White scored three runs and had one RBI. Senior outfielder Molly Reed (Carrollton, Ill./Carrollton) (Carrollton, Ill./Carrollton) had two hits, with two runs scored and a stolen base.
