(ELGIN, Ill., August 29) – The No. 18 McKendree University men's soccer team began its 2008 season with a win Friday afternoon defeating Judson University 1-0 at the Judson Invitational.
The Bearcats, now 1-0 overall, will face Taylor University Saturday at noon in their second and final game at the invitational.
With 14 minutes remaining in the first half, freshman midfielder Thomas Ward (Frodsham, England) snuck one past the Judson goalkeeper for his first collegiate career goal. Fellow freshman midfielder Fraser Williams (Rhondda, England/) (Rhondda, England) recorded his first collegiate assist on the goal.
The game was mainly a defensive battle with only a combined 16 shots in the contest, with McKendree having 11 of them. Freshman goalkeeper Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) (Oldham, England) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bearcats and had two saves in the win.
