(DECATUR, Ill., Sept. 13)—The McKendree University volleyball team split a tri-match Saturday at Millikin University. The Bearcats swept past Maryville University in the opener before falling in four sets to host Millikin.
The split leaves McKendree with an overall record of 5-3. The Bearcats will jump back into American Midwest Conference play Tuesday with an American Midwest Conference home match against Columbia College. McKendree and Columbia, the No. 9 team in the latest NAIA poll, will meet at 7 p.m. at the Melvin Price Convocation Center.
McKendree dominated its match against Maryville, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-12. Senior middle hitter Katelyn Kombrink (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) led a balanced attack with seven kills, while sophomore middle hitter Carrie Brickey (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) contributed six kills and a team-high four blocks. Senior setter Dana Maedge (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill./Highland) handed out 11 assists, while junior Kristina Paisley (Waterloo, Ill./Gibault) (Waterloo, Ill./Gibault) and junior libero Lauren Sarver (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) each handled 11 digs.
Against Millikin, McKendree dropped the first two sets before posting a convincing win in the third set. However, the host Big Blue rallied and took the final set to finish off the Bearcats. Millikin won by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 12-25 and 25-19.
Junior outside hitter Andrea Lucas (Festus, Mo./Festus) (Festus, Mo./Festus) registered 13 kills while Katelyn Kombrink (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) notched seven attacks and five blocks. Dana Maedge (Highland, Ill./Highland) posted 19 assists as Lauren Sarver (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) collected a team-high 13 digs.
