(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 24) – The No. 13 McKendree University men's soccer team defeated Park University, 2-1, on Saturday to keep their hopes of an American Midwest Conference championship alive.
No. 13 McKendree, now 13-1-1 overall (4-1 AMC), will host Mid-Continent University on Tuesday, October 27 at 6:00 p.m.
After a scoreless half of play, McKendree got on the scoreboard in the 65th minute on a goal by junior defender Steve Axe (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) on a long pass from junior midfielder Sam James (Southampton. England/Tauntons) (Southampton, England) to take a 1-0 lead. The Pirates tied the game in the 70th minute on a goal by Matthew Ashman from Jair Gooden, but the Bearcats broke the 1-1 tie two minutes later when sophomore forward Fraser Williams (Rhondda, England/) (Rhondda, Wales) received a pass from James and beat the Park goalkeeper to take a 2-1 lead. The Bearcat defense prevented the Pirates from scoring over the remaining 18 minutes to seal the win.
Sophomore Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) (Oldham, England) played all 90 minutes in goal for McKendree and had one save in the contest.
