(PEORIA, Ill., Oct. 23)—Junior wing Nick Smothers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) netted his second goal of the game with just 2:47 remaining to lift the McKendree University hockey team to a 3-2 victory Friday night at Bradley University.
The Bearcats pushed their season record above the .500 mark at 5-4, and will meet Bradley again Saturday evening in Peoria. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
Smothers' first goal early in the second period tied the contest at 1-1. The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead into the third period thanks to an unassisted goal by graduate student Brooks Boeschen (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East).
After Bradley tied the contest at 2-2 in the later stages of the third period, Smothers registered his game-winner off a pass from sophomore wing J. David Coleman (Budapest, Hungary/Fort Zumwalt West) (Budapest, Hungary/Fort Zumwalt West).
Senior Mike Stier (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) stopped 38 of 40 shots to pick up the victory in goal for McKendree.
