(Lebanon, Ill., Nov. 3)—The No. 3 McKendree University wrestling team started its dual season out on the right foot on Tuesday night with a 28-16 win over No. 14 Cumberland University.
The Bearcats will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Wednesday, November 11th for a dual against Missouri Baptist University at 7 p.m.
Freshman Isaiah Gonzalez (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) started things off for McKendree at 165 pounds and earned a 12-5 decision over David Wiese to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. Junior David Dwyer (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) followed that with a pin of Cumberland's Nick Sasfy in 1:59 to give McKendree a 9-0 lead. A 11-5 decision loss by junior Tanner Wolk (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) to Trey Myers at 184 pounds cut the Bulldogs deficit to 9-3, but a win by junior Andrew Sanchez (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon) (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon) in a 16-5 major decision over Eric Metzler at 197 pounds pushed the Bearcats back to a 13-3 lead.
Back to back losses by the Bearcats at heavyweight and at 125 pounds tied the contest 13-13, but three straight wins by junior Wade Lowe (Godfrey, Ill./Alton) (Godfrey, Ill./Alton), sophomore Kyle Williams (Scott Air Force Base, Ill./Mascoutah) (Scott Air Force Base, Ill./Mascoutah), and freshman Marquinten Bryant (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) at 133, 141, and 149 pounds, respectively, gave McKendree a 28-13 lead. A 4-0 decision loss at 157 pounds by sophomore Matt Beasley (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to Cumberland's James Casadaban in the final match of the night made the final score 28-16 in favor of McKendree.
