(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 9)—The McKendree University women's basketball team opened with a 27-2 run and never looked back in posting an 89-27 victory Monday at home against Mid-Continent University.
Junior guard Ashley Agee (Moberly, Mo./Moberly) (Moberly, Mo./Moberly) led a balanced attack with 17 points as the Bearcats recorded their largest margin of victory in nearly seven years. McKendree improves to 2-1 and will be on the road Thursday for a non-conference game at Saint Ambrose University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Davenport, Iowa.
Senior guard Haley Klingelhoefer (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) and freshman guard Meghan O'Connell (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) each chipped in with 11 points for McKendree. All 11 Bearcat players scored in the victory. McKendree's 62-point margin of victory is the team's biggest since a 107-27 win over Harris-Stowe State University on Jan. 21, 2003.
Defensive also played a big role in the victory as the Bearcats limited Mid-Continent (0-3) to just 25 percent shooting while forcing 36 turnovers. McKendree also held a 47-29 edge on the boards against the Cougars.
McKendree built its 27-2 lead in the first eight minutes of play. After Mid-Continent pulled back within 29-10, the Bearcats closed the half by scoring the final 21 points of the period to take a 50-10 lead at the intermission. McKendree's largest lead of the night came at 81-18 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Leann Voss (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) with 4:18 remaining.
Voss also added a game-high five assists and six steals for McKendree. Voss and sophomore forward Emily Woodland (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) each grabbed a team-best six rebounds for the Bearcats.
Kandi Knupp paced Mid-Continent with 12 points.
