(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 1) – The No. 23 McKendree University men's soccer team won its home opener on Tuesday night over NCAA Division II member Quincy University 2-0.
The No. 23 Bearcats, now 3-0 overall, will host Avila University on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the McKendree Soccer Classic. On Sunday, McKendree will host No. 12 Baker University at 5 p.m.
The Bearcats looked sluggish at the beginning of the Tuesday's contest, but slowly gained momentum and wore down the visiting Hawks. McKendree got on the board in the 37th minute on a successful penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Daniele Campailla (Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany/Bertha von Suttner) (Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany) for his second goal of the season. The Bearcats put things out of reach in the 72nd minute on a long goal by Richard Henderson (Dundee, Scotland/Lawside Academy) (Dundee, Scotland) from the left side on a pass by freshman midfielder Johny Tague (Livingston, Scotland/St. Margaret's) (Livingston, Scotland). The goal was Henderson's second of the season and the assist was Tague's first of his collegiate career.
Sophomore Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) (Oldham, England) played all 90 minutes in goal for McKendree and had three saves in his second shutout of the season.
