(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 19) – The No. 7 McKendree men's soccer team began defense of their American Midwest Conference championship on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over Missouri Baptist University.
No. 7 McKendree, now 8-0-1 overall (1-0 AMC), will host Westminster College (Mo.) on September 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The Bearcats wasted no time in the contest and took a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game on a header goal by sophomore defender Aaron Streid (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) on a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Tom Ward (Frodhsam, England/) (Frodsham, England). Sophomore midfielder Daniele Campailla (Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany/Bertha von Suttner) (Moerfelden,-Walldorf, Germany) gave McKendree a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute on a goal to the upper-left corner on a pass from junior midfielder Sam James (Southampton. England/Tauntons) (Southampton, England). Campailla scored his second goal of the game in the 70th minute on a penalty kick to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead and the win.
Sophomore Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) (Oldham, England) earned his eighth win and fifth shutout of the season after playing 90 minutes in goal and grabbing seven saves.
