(Lebanon, Ill., Sept. 5) – The No. 12 McKendree University women's soccer team opened up their season with a 4-0 win over Avila University at the inaugural McKendree Soccer Classic.
No. 12 McKendree, now 1-0 overall, hosts Baker University Sunday at 3 p.m. at Leemon Field in the final women's game of the McK Classic.
The Bearcats wasted no time and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Kyla Nighohossian (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) on an assist by senior midfielder Alex Adams (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) 36-seconds into the contest. Sophomore forward Sulyn Keomanivane (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) gave McKendree a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute on a pass from senior forward Sarah Ryan (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) (Rochester, Ill./Rochester). Senior midfielder Katelyn Cleveland (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) and freshman midfielder/forward Carlee Luehmann (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) both scored unassisted goals in the 61st and 64th minutes, respectively, to round out McKendree's scoring.
Junior Liz Yanko (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) improved to 1-0 on the season with the shutout win and had four saves.
