(CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky., Jan. 29)- The McKendree University wrestling team overcame an early nine point deficit on Friday night to defeat No. 9 Campbellsville University, 20-18.
The Bearcats, now 8-5 overall, will host NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis on Wednesday, February 3 at 7 p.m., at the Melvin Price Convocation Center.
After a decision loss in overtime at heavyweight and a forfeit loss at 125 pounds, junior Wade Lowe (Godfrey, Ill./Alton) (Godfrey, Ill./Alton) won a 5-4 decision over Tommy Pretty to cut the deficit to 9-3. Back-to-back losses at 141 and 149 pounds put McKendree down 18-6, but the Bearcats wouldn't lose another match in the dual.
Freshman Isaiah Gonzalez (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) won a 7-5 decision over Conor Young at 157 pounds and junior David Dwyer (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) won a 10-6 decision over James Linker at 165 pounds to bring McKendree within nine points, 18-9. Senior Josh Bryant (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle) (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle) won a narrow 8-7 decision over Bryan Wells at 174 pounds and junior Tanner Wolk (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) won a 10-3 major decision at 184 pounds to get the Bearcats within 18-16 with one match remaining. Junior Andrew Sanchez (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon) (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon) won a 10-2 major decision over Diante Wright at 197 pounds to give McKendree a 20-18 win.
