(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 7)—Five different McKendree University players scored in double figures as the Bearcats rolled to an 89-61 victory Thursday at home against William Woods University.
Junior guard Andy Wolff (Centralia, Ill./Metro-East Lutheran) (Centralia, Ill./Metro-East Lutheran) led a balanced attack as he scored a season-high 15 points in leading McKendree to victory in its American Midwest Conference opener for 2010. McKendree, the No. 14-ranked team in NAIA Division I, improves to 12-5 on the year, while William Woods slips to 4-11 on the year and 0-1 in the AMC.
Sophomore forward Sean Rakers (New Baden, IL/Wesclin) (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) came off the bench to add 14 opints and a pair of blocks, while senior forward Kenny Detmer (Aviston, Ill./Breese Central) (Aviston, Ill./Breese Central) and sophomore guard Karrington Pettiford (Florissant, MO/Christian Brothers) (Florissant, Mo./Christian Brothers) each chipped in with 12 points. Junior forward Eric Hobbie (Vandalia, Ill./Vandalia) (Vandalia, Ill./Vandalia) registered a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He also had four steals for the Bearcats.
McKendree controlled the boards against William Woods, holding a 60-28 edge in rebounding. The Bearcats also had a 36-4 edge in second-chance points.
In the first half, McKendree broke open a close game with a 15-2 run to take a 41-19 lead with 2:23 left in the period. The Bearcats built a 46-24 edge at the half, thanks in part to holding William Woods to just 32.1 percent shooting (9-of-28) in the opening 20 minutes.
Seth Thomas came off the bench to lead William Woods with 12 points, while Logan Decker notched 11 points and Dan Anderson had 10 for the Owls.
McKendree will be on the road Saturday for an AMC contest at Hannibal-LaGrange College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. in Hannibal, Mo.
