STEINER’S OVERTIME WINNER LIFTS McKENDREE HOCKEY TEAM PAST BRADLEY, 7-6

Alec Steiner provided the game-winning goal in overtime for the Bearcats

(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 30)—Senior defenseman Alec Steiner (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) scored at the 1:55 mark of overtime to help the McKendree University hockey team register a 7-6 victory Saturday at home against Bradley University.

 

Steiner's game-winner came after Bradley overcame a 6-4 third-period deficit. McKendree moves to 6-3-1 on the season and will be on the road for its next two games at Purdue University. The first of the two contests will be played Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Freshman center Dylan Mueth (New Baden, IL/Belleville East) (New Baden, Ill./Belleville East) netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead the way for McKendree. Freshman center Carlos Galvan (Mulvane, KS/Mulvane) (Mulvane, Kan.) registered three assists, including one on the game-winner by Steiner.

 

Trailing 1-0, McKendree got on the scoreboard thanks to a power play goal. Freshman wing Josh Hasamear (Collinsville, IL/Althoff Catholic) (Collinsville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) scored on a pass from Mueth to even the contest at 1-1. Bradley regained a 2-1 advantage before Mueth scored back-to-back goals, pushing the Bearcats back in front 3-2. Sophomore wing Nic Rolla (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./SIUE) followed with a shorthanded goal to extend McKendree's lead to 4-2.

 

After Bradley tied the contest at 4-4, McKendree regained a two-goal lead in the early stages of the third period. Mueth finished off his hat trick five minutes into the stanza, and freshman wing Ben O'Neil (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) followed with a tally just 65 seconds later to give the Bearcats a 6-4 lead.

 

Bradley managed to tie the game, with the equalizer coming at the 7:51 mark of the third period. The contest remained deadlocked until Steiner's game-winner.

 

Senior Mike Stier (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) stopped 44 shots in picking up the win in goal for McKendree.
