(OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 4) – After day one of the NAIA Wrestling National Championships, the No. 4 McKendree University Bearcats advanced six wrestlers into the championship quarterfinals. McKendree also have six still competing in the consolation bracket. McKendree currently sits in fourth place overall in the team standings.
At 141 pounds, sophomore Kyle Williams (Scott Air Force Base, Ill./Mascoutah) (Scott Air Force Base, Ill./Mascoutah) pinned Andrew Collins of California Baptist University in his only match of the day. Williams' win in 1:48 places him in a quarterfinal bout against Eric Graham of Missouri Valley College on Friday.
Junior Ryan Jahn (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) posted a 2-0 record on Thursday to advance to the championship quarterfinals at 149 pounds. Jahn defeated Brandon Starkey of Concordia University (Neb.) in the first round by fall in 1:26, and then defeated Cody Gibson of Menlo College in a 3-1 decision to earn his quarterfinal berth. Jahn will face Jimmy Eggemeyer of Southern Oregon University in his first match on Friday.
Senior Aaron Winning (Highland, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Highland, Ill./Althoff Catholic), defending national champion at 165 pounds, pinned Chris Diaz of William Penn University in his first round match in 56-seconds and followed it with a 12-0 major decision victory over Steven Urquizo of Dickinson State University. Winning will face Lamar Reed of California Baptist University in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Senior Josh Bryant (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle) (Tuttle, OKla./Tuttle) had two wins by pinfall at 174 pounds on Thursday. Bryant pinned Chad Morehead of Morningside College in 2:36 in his first match and followed with an impressive pin of Alex McKinney of Missouri Valley in 1:01. Bryant advances to the championship quarterfinals where he will face Enock Francois of California Baptist on Friday.
Junior Andrew Sanchez (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon) (Shiloh, Ill./O'Fallon Township), defending national champion at 197 pounds, won his only match on Thursday by decision, 10-4. Sanchez will face Ronald Lee of Southern Oregon on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Senior heavyweight Chas Maloch (Corona, Calif./Santiago) (Corona, Calif./Santiago) also won two matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinal round. Maloch defeated Tyler Ewart of Missouri Valley College in a 4-3 decision in overtime and followed with another thrilling overtime victory over Mike Wakim of Missouri Baptist University in a 5-2 decision. Maloch will face Levi Clahouns of Baker University on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Junior David Dwyer (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) won his first match in a 3-1 decision over Preston Brown of California Baptist, but was defeated by Bulla Tuzon of Dana College in a 3-1 decision in his second match. Junior Tanner Wolk (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) pinned Bryan Irsik of York College in his first match of the day, but fell in a 14-3 major decision to Christopher Platt of Southern Oregon. Both Dwyer and Wolk will compete Friday in the consolation bracket.
Four McKendree wrestlers lost their first match of the tournament on Thursday. Junior A.J. Ciccarelli (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville), sophomore John Burns (Decatur, Mo./Decatur) (Decatur, Mich./Decatur), freshman Isaiah Gonzalez (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) and senior Cedric Powell (Duncan, Okla./Duncan) (Duncan, Okla./Duncan) will all start in the consolation bracket on Friday.
