BEARCATS IMPROVE TO 30-14 OVERALL WITH SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER AVILA UNIVERSITY

(KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 18) – The McKendree University softball team won its 29^th and 30^th games of the season on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep at Avila University. McKendree won game one 4-0 and then took game two 8-2.

McKendree, 30-14 overall, will travel to Columbia, Mo., on April 20^th to face No. 25 Columbia College in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.

Game one was scoreless until McKendree got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a double by sophomore outfielder Kari Frazier (Lebanon, Ill./Lebanon HS) (Lebanon, Ill./Lebanon) that scored junior pinch runner Ashley Parrott (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West HS) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West). The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead one batter on a single by junior outfielder Jamie Corbier (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township HS) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) that score Frazier. McKendree added two more runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back home runs by senior catcher Angie Maue (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin HS) (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin) and senior third baseman Lindsay Newbold (Herrin,. Ill./Herrin HS) (Herrin, Ill./Herrin) to seal the win. Senior pitcher Katie Ward (White Hall, Ill./North Greene HS) (White Hall, Ill./North Greene) improved to 15-7 overall on the season and struck out four in the win, while Maue, Newbold and Frazier all had two hits in game one.

The Bearcats didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard in game two and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by junior first baseman Cathy Webb (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah HS) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) that scored senior outfielder Nicole Ostertag (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell HS) (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell). McKendree added two more runs in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by senior designated player Liz Dains (Valley Park, Mo./Valley Park HS) (Valley Park, Mo./Valley Park) and sophomore third baseman Casey White (Buncombe, Ill./Vienna HS) (Buncombe, Ill./Vienna) and took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning on a double by Ostertag and a single by Webb that each scored a run. The Lady Eagles scored two in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bearcats rebounded with three runs in the seventh inning to seal the win. Sophomore pitcher Autumn Allen (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East HS) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) also improved to 15-7 overall on the season and had six strikeouts. Webb had four hits, two RBI and one run scored in the win.
