(LEBANON, Ill., April 30) –The McKendree University softball team advanced to the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference tournament with two wins against Hannibal-LaGrange, 5-1 and 5-0, on Friday.
Third-seeded McKendree, 33-17 overall, will play No. 2 seed Williams Baptist College in a best of three series on May 4th and 5th. The first game on Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but is subject to change.
Both teams struggled early in game one, but the Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a single by designated player Amanda Smith that scored shortstop Shayla Cox. The Bearcats got the offense they needed in the fifth inning on a single by senior outfielder Nicole Ostertag (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell HS) (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) and doubles by senior second baseman Natalee Rujawtiz (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and senior catcher Angie Maue (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin HS) (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin) to take a 5-1 lead. McKendree's big fifth inning would be all it needed to seal the game one win. Senior pitcher Katie Ward (White Hall, Ill./North Greene HS) (White Hall, Ill./North Greene) had six strikeouts in the victory and improved to 17-9 overall this season. Six McKendree player's had hits in game one.
Game two started in a similar fashion and was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Maue hit a three-run home run to left-centerfield to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. A single by Ostertag in the fifth inning scored junior outfielder Jamie Corbier (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township HS) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) to take a 4-0 lead and another Ostertag single in the seventh scored freshman shortstop Elizabeth Hess (Evansville, Ill./Sparta HS) (Evansville, Ill./Sparta) to give McKendree the 5-0 win. Sophomore pitcher Autumn Allen (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East HS) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) struck out eight in the game and improved to 16-8 overall on the season. Ostertag had four hits with two RBI and a run scored in the win.
