(LEBANON, Ill., April 9)—The McKendree University baseball team split an American Midwest Conference doubleheader Friday at Harris-Stowe State University. The Bearcats were edged in the first game 2-1 before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
Friday's split leaves McKendree with an overall record of 17-17. The Bearcats are now 4-6 in the AMC. McKendree and Harris-Stowe will wrap up their AMC weekend series with another doubleheader Saturday in St. Louis. First pitch is set for noon.
Senior catcher Joe Dickman (Alhambra, Ill./Highland) (Alhambra, Ill./Highland) helped the Bearcats salvage the doubleheader split when he belted a two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. Senior infielder Tyson Moore (Salem, Ill./Salem) (Salem, Ill./Salem) followed with a solo home run in a seven-run seventh inning.
Senior outfielder Ryan Meyer (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) (Breese, Ill./Breese) blasted a solo home run in the third inning of the opener for McKendree's only run of the contest. Harris-Stowe (20-15, 6-6 AMC) won the first game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Both of the Hornets' runs in the game were unearned and came off senior right-hander Nolan Martz (East Alton, IL/Roxana) (East Alton, Ill./Roxana). Martz scattered nine hits with five strikeouts in the outing.
Senior infielder Kory Peppenhorst (Carlyle, Ill./Carlyle) (Carlyle, Ill./Carlyle) had four hits on the day, with two in each contest.
