(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 12)—The McKendree University hockey team wrapped up its 2010-11 regular season with an 11-2 loss Saturday at Robert Morris University-Springfield.
After spotting the Bearcats a 1-0 lead, the host Eagles ripped off 10 unanswered goals to pull away for the victory. McKendree slips to 15-6-1 on the year and will begin preparations for post-season play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 3 Pacific Regional playoffs next weekend in Colorado. McKendree is the No. 6 seed in the event and will play No. 7 seed California State University-Northridge on Friday at 9:15 a.m. MT. This is the first time that the Bearcats have qualified for ACHA regional post-season play.
At Robert Morris-Springfield, senior defenseman Alec Steiner (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) scored both goals on the night for McKendree. Junior wing David Coleman (Budapest, Hungary/Fort Zumwalt West) assisted on both goals, while junior defenseman Ryan Donahue (Levittown, Pa./Truman) (Levittown, Pa./Truman) also added an assist for the Bearcats.
Steiner tallied his first goal of the contest just 2:16 into play to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Robert Morris-Springfield responded by scoring the next 10 goals – including the first seven of the third period -- to build a 10-1 advantage. Steiner broke the scoring binge for McKendree with 7:37 left to play.
Junior Nathan Campo (Westmont, IL/Downers Grove South) (Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove South) earned the start in goal for McKendree and allowed four goals in taking the loss.
