(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Feb. 1)- The McKendree University wrestling team's upset bid at No. 16 University of Indianapolis came up short on Friday night in a 22-18 loss.

The Beacats fall to 3-7 overall on the season and will compete Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Greyhound Open in Indianapolis, Ind.

McKendree jumped out to a great start and took an early 6-0 lead following decision wins at 165 and 174 pounds. Sophomore Nick Haferkamp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) defeated Jeff Weiss in a 9-6 decision to open the dual, and junior Isaiah Gonzalez (Montgomery, Ill./Montini Catholic) followed with a 9-3 decision over Shelby Mappes.

The Bearcat's lead was cut in half following a loss at 184 pounds, but they picked up back-to-back wins to extend the lead out to 12-3. Sophomore Julian Smith (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) defeated Taylor Scott by decision, 5-3, at 197 pounds and sophomore Ross Janney (Daleville, Ind./Yorktown) edged Even Wooding, 3-1, in the first sudden victory period at heavyweight.

Following a forfeit loss at 125 pounds, junior Brenden Murphy (Palos Park, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the points right back for McKendree by pinning Paul Beck in 1:15 to extend the lead to 18-9.

The Bearcats dropped their final matches and couldn't hold on in the end to drop the dual 22-18.
