(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 12)—The McKendree University hockey team had its two-game win streak snapped Friday night at Hope College in Michigan, 7-3.

The Bearcats and Flying Dutchmen were tied at 1-1 after one period of play before a six-goal second period helped push the hosts to victory in their season opener. McKendree slips to 4-3 on the year and will wrap up its weekend stay in Michigan Saturday at 1 p.m. ET against Hope.

Friday night's contest was scoreless until the later stages of the first period, when the Flying Dutchmen netted a short-handed goal with just 2:05 left in the stanza to grab the early lead. McKendree answered just 40 seconds later on the power play as sophomore defenseman Aaron Rogers (Troy, IL/Triad) found the back of the net, with assists going to freshman forwards Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) and Jason Beilke. Hope took control with a scoring outburst in the second period, scoring six times to build a 7-1 advantage. Five of the six goals for the Flying Dutchmen came via the power play.

McKendree tried to rally in the third period with goals from freshman defenseman Steve Csanyi (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Nicholson) and senior forward Dylan Mueth (Lebanon, IL/Wesclin ), but could get no closer than the final score. Mueth's tally with 4:45 remaining was a short-handed goal for the Bearcats.

Sophomore Tony Salamone (Jefferson City, MO/Jefferson City) and freshman Chris Stier (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) split time in goal for McKendree, with Salamone taking the loss after allowing five goals in just over 30 minutes of play.
