(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 13)—It was a different day but the same result for the McKendree University hockey team Saturday afternoon at Hope College in Michigan.
For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Bearcats dropped a 7-3 decision to the host Flying Dutchmen. McKendree trailed 4-0 in the early stages of the second period and could not recover in slipping to 4-4 on the year. The Bearcats will be on the road next weekend for games in Springfield, Mo., against Missouri State University. The first contest will be played Friday night at 9:45 p.m.
Hope raced to a 3-0 lead after the first period, then scored in the first seven minutes of the second period to stretch its advantage to four goals. Just over a minute later, freshman forward
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) got the Bearcats on the scoreboard with a power-play goal off a pass from senior forward
Dylan Mueth (Lebanon, IL/Wesclin ). The Flying Dutchmen responded with a tally late in the second period to take a 5-1 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.
Junior forward
Jacob Schlote (House Springs, MO/Hillsboro) started the third-period scoring for McKendree at the 15:15 mark with the man advantage as Sizer picked up the assist. Less than a minute later, freshman forward
Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) helped the Bearcats rally within 5-3 with sophomore forward
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/Triad) collecting the assist. But Hope was able to hold off the Bearcats' comeback attempt and added two more power-play goals late in the contest to seal the win.
Freshman
Chris Stier (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) earned the start in goal for McKendree and was replaced by sophomore
Tony Salamone (Jefferson City, MO/Jefferson City) following the Flying Dutchmen's fourth tally of the afternoon. Stier was credited with the loss for the Bearcats.
