Late Lead Escapes McKendree Hockey Team in 6-5 Loss at Missouri State

Ryan Sizer scored twice in the second period at Missouri State
(SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 18)—For the second time in as many days, the McKendree University hockey team saw a third-period lead slip away at Missouri State University in a 6-5 loss to the Ice Bears at Mediacom Ice Rink in Springfield, Mo.

The Bearcats led 5-3 with 17 minutes to play, but the host Ice Bears received a hat trick from Michael Humme in the final 10:25 of play to rally for the victory. McKendree slips to 4-5-1 overall and will return to action Friday night in Dubuque, Iowa, for a game against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Face-off is set for 9 p.m.

McKendree netted the lone first-period goal when senior forward Carlos Galvan (Mulvane, KS/Mulvane) scored off a pass from senior forward Elliot Emann (Washington, Mo./Washington) at the 13:42 mark. Freshman forward Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) scored the first of his two goals just 1:17 into the second period to stretch the Bearcats' lead to 2-0 before the Ice Bears got on the board moments later to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sizer then tallied a power-play goal midway through the period to help McKendree regain a two-goal advantage.

Missouri State answered moments later to pull back within a goal at 3-2. With just 1:50 left in the second period, senior forward Dylan Mueth (Lebanon, IL/Wesclin ) scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal to push the Bearcats' lead back to a pair of goals. However, the Ice Bears tallied in the final minute of the stanza to rally within 4-3.

With 17 minutes to play, freshman forward Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) scored off a pass from Mueth to give McKendree a 5-3 advantage. From that point, Humme took over, scoring twice midway through the period to tie the game at 5-5, then netting the game-winner with exactly one minute to play.

Freshman Chris Stier (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) picked up the loss in goal for McKendree. Stier had 26 saves in the contest.
