(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 30)—The McKendree University hockey team held off a late charge from host Aurora University to post a 5-3 victory Friday evening in Aurora, Ill.
Senior forward
Dylan Mueth (Lebanon, IL/Wesclin ) scored a goal and had a pair of assists to lead the way for McKendree, which snapped an eight-game winless streak in the process. The Bearcats are now 8-13-4 on the year and will wrap up the 2014-15 regular season Saturday afternoon against Aurora. Face-off is at 4:30 p.m.
Mueth notched the only goal of the first period off a pass from freshman forward
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) to give McKendree an early lead. The Bearcats stretched the margin to 2-0 when junior forward
Jacob Schlote (House Springs, MO/Hillsboro) scored an unassisted goal at the 18:38 mark. Aurora cut the McKendree lead in half just over a minute later before the Bearcats netted three unanswered goals to close the middle stanza.
Freshman forward
Garrett Kellam (St. Joseph, MO/Central) started the flurry with 11:35 left in the second period as Mueth and freshman defenseman
Nick Brendel (Fenton, MO/Fox) picked up the assists. Sizer made it 4-1 at the 3:33 mark with Sizer scoring off passes from Kellam and freshman defenseman
Steve Csanyi (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Nicholson). Freshman forward
Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) capped the outburst with just under two minutes left in the period as Mueth collected his second assist of the night.
Aurora scored twice in the third period but could not come all the way back in the effort. Freshman
Trevor Klostermann (Highland, IL/Highland) notched the victory in goal for McKendree, making 27 saves in the contest.
