(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 1)—The McKendree University hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak in convincing fashion with an 8-2 victory Saturday evening at the University of Iowa.
The Bearcats overcame an early 2-1 deficit by ripping off seven unanswered goals to post the win. McKendree improves to 7-7 on the year and will have nearly two weeks off before returning to action Oct. 13 on the road against the University of Missouri.
Freshman forward
Sasha-Mitchell Perron (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Bellingham Blazers (NPHL)) scored twice and had an assist for McKendree in its win at Iowa. Sophomore forward
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) contributed a goal and three assists in the effort, while freshman forward
Lazar Lestaric (Belgrade, Serbia/Sesta) chipped in with a goal and assist. Sophomore forward
Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) also handed out two assists for the Bearcats, who tallied a trio of goals on the power-play against the Hawkeyes.
Iowa scored two minutes into Saturday's contest to grab an early lead before Sizer answered a minute later with a short-handed goal to knot the contest at 1-1. The score stood until midway through the second period, when the Hawkeyes scored at the 9:28 mark to grab a 2-1 advantage.
From there, McKendree took control. Perron tied the game at 2-2 on a power-play tally with assists from Lestaric and Sizer. Freshman forward
Shane Hill (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) gave the Bearcats the lead for good at 3-2 on an even-strength goal with 6:15 left in the second period. Sophomore defenseman
Josh Donovan (Ojai, CA/Cornerstone Academy) extended the lead to 4-2 with exactly three minutes left in the stanza.
McKendree dominated the third period, netting four goals while holding Iowa off the scoreboard. Perron opened the scoring in the final 20 minutes before sophomore forward
Jason Beilke, Jr. (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield Central), stretched the lead to 6-2 just 41 seconds later. The Bearcats' final two goals of the contest came with the man advantage as Lestaric and forward
Dylan Mueth (Lebanon, IL/Wesclin ) found the back of the net to finish off the victory.
Freshman
Andrew Best (Midland, Ontario, Canada/Cambridge Bears Junior A) collected the win in goal for McKendree. Best made 27 saves in the outing as the Bearcats held a 58-29 edge in shots on goal.
