(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 22)—The McKendree University hockey team snapped a 13-game winning streak for Iowa State University with a 5-4 triumph on Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
The Bearcats overcame a 4-2 deficit after two periods of play thanks to a trio of goals in the final 20 minutes of action. Freshman forward
Lazar Lestaric (Belgrade, Serbia/Sesta) scored the game-winner with just over two minutes remaining to give the Bearcats their fourth win in five outings and send the Cyclones to their first regular-season loss of the 2015-16 campaign. McKendree is now 10-8 on the season and will return to action Dec. 4-5 with a two-game set at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
Lestaric and sophomore defenseman
Steve Csanyi (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Nicholson) each had a goal and three assists in the victory for McKendree. Sophomore forward
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) chipped in with a goal and a pair of assists in the effort. Freshman forwards
Ty Watt (Barrie, Ontario, Canada/Rama Aces GMHL) and
Sasha-Mitchell Perron (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Bellingham Blazers (NPHL)) scored the other goals for the Bearcats.
Just like Friday night's contest – a 4-3 Iowa State win – the hosts jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before McKendree stormed back to tie matters. Watt found the back of the net with just 1:22 left in the period to start the comeback before Csanyi helped the Bearcats pull even with just 14 seconds left before the first intermission. The Cyclones rebounded to score the next two goals to build a 4-2 advantage after two periods of play.
Seven minutes into the third period, Perron started the Bearcats' comeback on a power-play goal to trim the deficit to 4-3. McKendree then scored twice in a 23-second span late in the contest to stun the Cyclones. First, Sizer knotted the score at 4-4 with just 2:51 on the clock before Lestaric tallied the game-winner at the 2:28 mark.
Freshman
Andrew Best (Midland, Ontario, Canada/Cambridge Bears Junior A) collected 35 saves in goal to collect the victory for McKendree. Best stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period.
