(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 27)—The McKendree University hockey team closed out a two-game sweep of Indiana University Saturday afternoon with an 8-5 victory over the Hoosiers at East Alton Ice Arena.
Sophomore forward
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School) netted a pair of goals and added an assist in helping the Bearcats notch their third straight win. McKendree will look to continue its winning ways Friday night by hosting Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in East Alton. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
Seven different players scored for McKendree in Saturday's victory. Freshman forward
Sasha-Mitchell Perron (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Bellingham Blazers (NPHL)) chipped in a goal and assist in the effort, while sophomore forward
Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Fox) handed out a pair of assists for the Bearcats.
The game was scoreless until the later stages of the first period when McKendree erupted for three late goals to build a 3-0 advantage at the intermission. Junior forward
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon) broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season at the 4:42 mark. Less than two minutes later, Sizer pumped in his first goal of the afternoon before senior forward
Jacob Schlote (House Springs, MO/Hillsboro) closed the outburst with a tally just 42 seconds later.
Indiana tied the contest by scoring the first three goals of the second period. Senior forward
Andrew Falls (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) gave the Bearcats a 4-3 lead with just over four minutes left in the stanza when Sizer found the back of the net two minutes later for a two-goal cushion. The Hoosiers scored just seconds later to trim its deficit to 5-4, then netted the equalizer early in the third period.
With 17:15 to play, sophomore forward
Billy Lamb (St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's) gave McKendree the lead for good off a pass from Sizer. Sophomore forward
Jason Beilke, Jr. (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield Central), and Perron each scored following Lamb's tally to help seal the win for the Bearcats.
Freshman
Andrew Best (Midland, Ontario, Canada/Cambridge Bears Junior A) picked up the win in goal for McKendree. Best registered 21 saves in the contest.
