(EAST ALTON, Ill., Oct. 29) – The McKendree University D2 men's hockey team beat Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 10-5.
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the game at the 11:06 mark of the first period when
Kristjan Toivola (Bellingham, WA/Bellingham Blazers (NPHL)) found the back of the net on a pass from Dimitryo Golovko. McKendree took a two-goal lead after a great play by
Stanislav Gavrus (Grodno, Belarus/Gymnasium #1) to beat the SIUE defender and goalie. SIUE responded with a goal of their own with 13:15 left in the second period. The Bearcats had an answer though, with
Levi Armstrong (Urbana, IL/Urbana HS) finding the back of the net on a pass from
Ryan Sizer (Belleville, Ontario, Canada/Moira Secondary School). The Cougars responded again to close the gap on McKendree's lead. The Bearcats kept scoring though, with
Blair Davies (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Christ the King) scoring a short-handed breakaway goal to make the score 4-2. Sizer scored his first of the game with just under five minutes left in the second period with assists credited to Armstrong and
Lazar Lestaric (Belgrade, Serbia/Sesta). Just 43 seconds later
Dominic Naas (Neurensdorf, Zurich, Switzerland/KV Zurich Business School) netted a goal with
Kristjan Toivola (Bellingham, WA/Bellingham Blazers (NPHL)) and Steven Csanyi registering assists. SIUE scored again with 2:32 to go in the second period, with the Bearcats still leading 6-3.
Ty Watt (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) closed out the scoring in the second period with 1:10 to go, with Naas and Csanyi assisting on the goal to put McKendree up 7-3. Sizer opened the scoring in the third period with Armstrong and Lestaric registering assists. SIUE scored two more times in the third period, to make it 8-5 Bearcats, but McKendree wasn't done scoring. The Bearcats added two more goals to close out the game, including a tally by Sizer to complete his hattrick. McKendree came out on top in the game by a final score of 10-5.
Sizer scored a hattrick and added one assist in the game for four points. Armstrong netted one goal and added two assists for three points in this game. Both Csanyi and Lestaric each added two assists in the game and Naas scored once along with one assist for two points.
The Bearcats are back in action against Bradley University at the Owens Center in Peoria, Ill. on November 4 and 5.
