(IOWA CITY, Iowa., Oct. 21) – The McKendree University men's D2 hockey team completed the sweep of the University of Iowa on Saturday with a 6-3 win at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
McKendree's record improves to 7-3 with the sweep. The Bearcats move to 5-1 in Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Gold Division play.
The Bearcats jumped out to a lead just 6:13 into the game. Sophomore forward
Tyler Wilson (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada) scored on a pass from freshman forward
Connor Brennan (Castle Rock, CO/Regis Jesuit High School) to break open the scoring. Junior defenseman
Ty Watt (Barrie, Ontario, Canada/Rama Aces GMHL) took on a new role in the contest, playing as a forward. Watt scored his first of the game with 9:27 left in the first period on a play from junior forward
Jacob Young (Arnold, MO/Meramec Sharks) and freshman defenseman
Ryan Reader (Granite City, IL/Granite City High School). Watt scored his second of the period just five minutes later, with sophomore defenseman
Alec Nichols (Cedar Rapids, IA/Northern Iowa Bulls NA3HL) and freshman defenseman
Daniel Nordlander (Göteborg, Sweden/Wasaskolan Tingsryd) recording assists. Iowa managed to sneak in a goal with 3:21 remaining in the period, however, McKendree held a 3-1 at the end of the first period.
The Hawkeyes took the momentum from the late first period goal and opened the second period with two power-play goals to tie the game at three a side. Wilson netted the game winning goal on a pass by sophomore forward
Dominic Naas (Neurensdorf, Zurich, Switzerland/Casper Coyotes WSHL) who received the puck from Brennan, which gave McKendree the 4-3 lead heading into the third period.
McKendree continued to pressure Iowa in the third period, with Naas lighting the lamp with 12:46 left to play. Wilson and Brennan recorded assists on Naas' goal. Watt completed the hattrick in the third period after burying the puck behind the Hawkeyes goalie, with Nichols notching the assist.
Junior goaltender
Andrew Best (Midland, Ontario, Canada/Cambridge Bears Junior A team) stopped 24 of 27 in the game for a save percentage of 0.889. Best's record improves to 5-3 with Saturday's victory. Watt registered three goals for his first career hattrick. Watt's last multi-goal game came January 14
th against Northern Illinois, when he netted two goals. Wilson scored twice in the game and added one assist for three points. Brennan notched two assists for two points in the contest.
