(FREMONT, Neb., Jan. 25) – The McKendree University men's D1 hockey team completed the Midwest College Hockey (MCH) sweep of Midland on Saturday night on the road behind a 6-4 victory. On the season, McKendree carries a perfect 10-0 record on the road.
The Bearcats advance to 12-2 overall and 10-2 in MCH play.
Midland scored the first goal of the game to take an early lead, but senior
Michael Weedman (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North High School) was set up by freshman
Bryce Dirscherl (San Diego, CA/Thunder Ridge High School) to even the game at one six minutes later. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the period and would head into the second period tied at one.
McKendree wasted no time in the second period, scoring two goals in the opening minute of the period. Freshman
Connor Mullins (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Donald A. Wilson Secondary School) gave the Bearcats the lead and sophomore
Cory Robinson (St. Charles, MO/) extended the lead. Senior
Dominic Naas (Neurensdorf, Zurich, Switzerland/Casper Coyotes WSHL) and
Ty Watt (Barrie, Ontario, Canada/Rama Aces GMHL) were credited with assists on the goals. Each team scored twice more in the period with Watt and junior
Aleks Ivasenko (Riga, Latvia/Riga 1 Distance Education High School) collecting goals for the Bearcats. After two periods of play, McKendree held a 5-3 lead.
Midway through the final period,
Lazar Lestaric (Belgrade, Serbia/National Sports Academy USHS) gave the Bearcats an insurance goal to push the lead to three. Midland would answer back but McKendree would go on to win 6-4, completing the road sweep.
The Bearcats will be back on the road next weekend as they head to Missouri State University.
